10 Designers To Watch from New York Fashion Week 2019

Top Fashion Designers at New York Fashion Week 2019

Having kicked off last Tuesday, February 4, New York Fashion Week 2019 is taking the Big Apple by storm with dozens of fashion designer collections that have been catching our eye. Typically, NYFW is separated into two weeks – womenswear and menswear. This year, however, the shows are intertwined, making for an exciting change in pace. We have perused the Fall 2019 collections and picked the top fashion designers you’ll want to take notice of.

10 Fashion Designers To Watch at NY Fashion Week 2019

RODARTE – 2/5

Kate and Laura Mulleavy, sisters and co-founders of Rodarte, have been dominating the fashion world since they started theirin 2005.

The sisters’ design and costume work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, and they received a Critics Choice Award nomination for designing the ballet costumes for the Academy-Award Winning film Black Swan. Their expertise in costuming is obvious in the Rodarte Fall 2019 collection, which boasts bold silhouettes, whimsical details and leather counterparts. It is no wonder why celebrities such as Marisa Tomei, Tracee Ellis Ross, Dakota Fanning, Elsie Fisher and Maggie Rogers were in the front row for the show last Tuesday.

TOM FORD – 2/6

Womenswear and menswear collections were shown during the same NYFW event this year, and no one took advantage of this more than designer & filmmaker Tom Ford.

The Tom Ford Fall 2019 Collection had womenswear and menswear looks sharing the same runway, with beautifully tailored suits featured on both male and female models, taking the collection to another level. Tom Ford is also a favorite of football players Victor Cruz, Odell Beckham Jr., and Cam Newton, who were all seen in the front row of the show.

BODE – 2/6

After graduating from Parsons School of Design, Emily Adams Bode launched her menswear line Bode in 2016. In the last three years, Bode has quickly gained traction in the fashion world.

Less than a year after launching her label, Adams Bode was the first female menswear designer to present at New York Fashion Week: Men’s. By repurposing vintage textiles into new and exciting pieces, Adams Bode has created an aesthetic that is unique and nostalgic. One frequent client of Bode is Leon Bridges, who wore a custom Bode suit to the 2019 Grammy’s, where he won for Best Traditional R&B Performance. Adams Bode was also featured on Forbes’ 30 Under 30: Art & Style 2019 list.

KATE SPADE NEW YORK – 2/8

Kate Spade New York has been through several drastic changes in the last few years, from the Tapestry, Inc. acquisition to the untimely passing of designer Kate Spade.  As the new creative director of Kate Spade New York, Nicola Glass has been tasked with revitalizing the brand while also paying homage to its legendary founder.

Although accessories are still 50 percent of the brand’s business, Glass has stated that ready-to-wear is an “opportunity” for the brand. The Fall 2019 collection is only the brand’s second on the Fashion Week runway, but it seems we will see Kate Spade for seasons to come.

KIM SHUI – 2/8

“Sometimes I think female designers need a reminder that being sexy isn’t wrong,” Kim Shui recently said during an interview with Elle during NY Fashion Week. This sentiment was loud and clear in her 2019 Fall collection, which boasted see-through blouses, snakeskin jackets, and bright yellow tights.

Sexy has always been a major ingredient in Kim Shui’s pieces, making her a favorite amongst celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Cardi B, who wore Kim Shui on her Bodak Yellow single cover. Kim Shui was also named one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30: Art & Style 2019.

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO – 2/9

After becoming a household name by winning the fourth season of Project Runway, Christian Siriano has been a staple of red carpet and runway fashion.

Kicking off the futuristic Fall 2019 collection was supermodel Chanel Iman, who would also showcase a gorgeous bright purple gown toward the end of the show. Perhaps the most memorable moment of the show, however, was Ashley Graham closing the show in a sheer, crystal-adorned gown. The final look had the front row, consisting of Danielle Brooks, Mariska Hargitay, Debra Messing, Christina Hendricks, and Christina Ricci,  going wild.

BRANDON MAXWELL – 2/9

Launching his eponymous brand in 2015, Brandon Maxwell already has an impressive celebrity client list, including Michelle Obama, Meghan Markle, Oprah, Blake Lively, Jane Fonda & Tiffany Haddish.

Maxwell explained that his Fall 2019 collection was designed during a time of illness in his family, which led to “protective and armor-like” looks. Varying greatly from the bright colors of his Spring 2019 collection, Maxwell shows the vast diversity he is capable of in his clothing.

TORY BURCH – 2/10

Since opening her namesake brand in 2004, Tory Burch has been a force in the fashion industry. She has won numerous awards for her clothing and accessories, and she shows no sign of stopping. It is no surprise then that her Fall 2019 front row was filled with famous fashionistas like Zoe Saldana, Lana Condor, Mindy Kaling, and Naomi Watts.

In a backstage interview with Vogue, Burch credits the now-defunct liberal arts college, Black Mountain College, as the inspiration for her preppy Fall 2019 collection. As always, the pieces are fashionable yet accessible and are sure to be a hit for women of all ages.

LAQUAN SMITH – 2/10

Starting in 2013, LaQuan Smith‘s brand has always been about glamour. His aesthetic caught the attention of fashion heavy-hitters like Beyonce, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian-West early on, catapulting him to become a fashion week staple.

LaQuan Smith Fall 2019 featured lots of plaid and leopard print, often styled together to create an interesting clash of patterns. Presenting both daring womenswear and menswear, LaQuan Smith was definitely a show not to miss this season.

DION LEE – 2/10

(left) A look from the Dion Lee Fall 2019 collection; (right) designer Dion Lee

Dion Lee is one of the most sought-after and innovative Australian designers in recent times. New York has become a secondary home for the eponymous brand, which may explain why Dion Lee has such a storied history showing at New York Fashion Week.

The most obvious highlight of Dion Lee Fall 2019 was the use of corsets throughout the show. These corsets further drove home the theme of structure, but also added contrasting femininity to the slouched work pants and suit jackets.
