Tuned In: AAE’s Favorite Podcasts This Fall

The AAE crew has been the BEST resource for discovering new podcasts, so I surveyed the team to learn about what they’re listening to now. Their replies ran the gamut from pop culture gems to southern-flavored podcasts on books and small business. Here’s what our team will be listening to this fall. You may find your new favorite podcast in our list below.

1. The Big Picture

Marissa Hill

“This podcast is all about movies. The hosts, Sean Finnesee and Amanda Dobbins chat about current releases, future movies, and Oscar contenders. They also do episodes dedicated to specific actors’ or directors’ bodies of work, along with fun ‘drafts’ where they compete to draft the best collection of films for a given year. The Big Picture covers mainstream movies and niche films you may not have heard of. The hosts have a long history as work colleagues turned friends; you can tell by how they interact. Episodes featuring guest host Chris Ryan are always hilarious and unhinged!  Great for any film buff in your life.”

Marissa Hill, CMP, DES, Director of Event Logistics

2. From The Front Porch Podcast

“This probably won’t grab everyone, but I love “From the Front Porch.” It’s described in the show notes as “a weekly conversational podcast on books, small business, and life in the South” that is recorded by Annie B. Jones, owner of the independent bookstore, The Bookshelf in Thomasville, GA.  As a reader and former publishing employee, I like to hear what should be on my TBR (to-be-read) list. After listening to the podcast for the past year, I know and trust Annie and her staff to have curated a selection for me. There’s something very cozy and fun about the podcast. You feel like you know Annie (and a few of her staff members who regularly appear) personally—as if you walked into her store and she was hand-selling to you.”

3. Be There in Five

Jasmine Mansfield

Be There in Five is a refreshing weekly long-form podcast with host pop culture commentator and New York Times bestselling author Kate Kennedy. It’s refreshing and relatable. If you’re a millennial, it’s a must-listen. And if you’re not, it’s still a must-listen because Kate is honest, punny, and well-researched. She brings you back to your childhood while keeping it current with pop culture. She’s intelligent, her commentary is creative, allowing you to zone out and enter her mind…and she’s my best friend.

4. Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History

Evan Owens

“I’m a fan of Hardcore History. I enjoy exploring the endless, interwoven events, characters, and storylines that stretch back thousands of years into the past and seeing how their impact can be felt today. Dan Carlin is known for his hours-long narration featuring his raspy voice and penchant for intentionally getting into the weeds as he guides listeners through every possible angle of historical epics. Try putting the podcast on while taking care of house chores or yard work, and see how Carlin builds a new world around you with just his words, transporting you back in time. When you return from ancient Persia or get back from one of Caesar’s military campaigns, you’ll be happy to see your clothes folded and weeds pulled, though you may have forgotten you were hard at work.”

Evan Owens, Marketing Communications Manager

5. Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard

Margo Dunnigan

“I am enamored with Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard! His producer and cohost Monica Padman is a voice of reason, and their on-air chemistry is entertaining! I love that there’s a balance of funny and serious subjects and a variety of guests who are celebrities and noncelebrities alike, such as  Andrew Newberg, Sam Richardson, and Julianne Hough, to name a few.  There are so many amazing episodes, like a recent one with Kristen Bell and Adam Brody and the 20-year Without a Paddle reunion with Seth Green and Matthew Lillard! Hearing these actors as real adults discussing real adult issues was relatable and hilarious. Definitely worth a listen!”

Margo Dunnigan, Chief Operations Officer
