Al Michaels, the play-by-play voice for NBC’s Sunday Night Football, called Super Bowl LVI on February 13, 2022 on NBC and Peacock. This Super Bowl marks Michaels’ 11th Super Bowl play-by-play assignment – tied for the most ever for a television commentator, joining former CBS and FOX announcer Pat Summerall (11). Michaels has covered more major sports events than any sportscaster, including the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

One of the most renowned sports broadcasters of all time, Michaels recently completed his 16th season as the voice of NBC’s Sunday Night Football and record 36th campaign as the play-by-play announcer of the NFL in primetime. Michaels began his television journalism career when he joined ABC Sports in 1976 and has been recognized for his contributions across multiple sports, serving as the play-by-play announcer for events such as the Stanley Cup in 1993 and NCAA Football.

SNF averaged 18.5 million TV viewers in 2021, and is on pace to rank as primetime’s #1 TV show in all key metrics for an unprecedented 11th consecutive year, adding to its record for the most successive years atop the charts (since 1950), based on official live plus same day data provided by Nielsen. Michaels has been honored as Sportscaster of the Year multiple times, including prestigious recognition in both Ohio and Hawaii, and has received eight Emmy Awards, including for Outstanding Sports Personality -- Host in 1989.

In December 2020, Michaels was honored with the 2021 Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. He is one of only five distinguished broadcasters to be recognized with both the baseball honor and the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Award. He has also been recognized in the Television Academy Hall of Fame and the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame for his significant contributions to sports journalism.

Michaels’ autobiography, "You Can’t Make This Up," released on November 18, 2014, was on the New York Times best-seller list for hard-cover, non-fiction titles for two months. Among his many accolades, he was also the first sportscaster in history to receive a News Emmy nomination for his coverage of the 1989 San Francisco earthquake during the World Series.

Regarded as one of the best baseball announcers of all time, Michaels was ABC’s lead baseball play-by-play announcer during the network’s coverage of Major League Baseball. His extensive career has also included significant Olympic coverage, including serving as a host on NBC’s daytime coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Michaels currently resides in Los Angeles, California. As a celebrated figure in sports broadcasting, he continues to be a significant presence in sports media and public speaking.
