Alexandra Carter

Alexandra Carter is a Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Mediation Clinic at Columbia Law School. She also directs the Edson Queiroz Foundation Mediation Program and Clinical Programs at the institution. Over her career, Carter has dedicated significant effort in enhancing negotiation skills for a wide range of individuals and organizations. She is recognized globally as an expert negotiation trainer, particularly noted for her workshops at the United Nations, where she has trained diplomats from over 80 nations.

In addition to her teaching and training roles, Carter is an accomplished author, recognized for her Wall Street Journal Bestselling book "Ask for More: Ten Questions to Negotiate Anything," published by Simon & Schuster on May 5, 2020. Her work extends beyond the academic and professional spheres into media, where she frequently comments on negotiation and pay equity for women, with appearances on platforms such as MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Hardball with Chris Matthews, the CBS Early Show, and NPR’s Marketplace.

Carter’s contributions to education and mediation have been celebrated with several honors, including Columbia University’s highest teaching accolade in 2019. Her early academic and professional background includes a Jane Marks Murphy Prize for clinical advocacy during her time as a student at Columbia Law School, and experience as a mediator through the New York Peace Institute. She also held a position as a private equity analyst with Goldman Sachs, after spending a year in Taiwan on a Fulbright scholarship studying political tensions related to Taiwan's status.
