Amir Khan is a British former professional boxer celebrated for his achievements as both an Olympian and world champion. He made history as Britain’s youngest boxing Olympic medalist, winning silver in the lightweight division at the 2004 Summer Olympics at just 17 years old. Named "Prospect of the Year" by ESPN in 2007, Khan turned professional with great success, becoming one of the youngest British world champions at 22 when he won the WBA title after defeating Andreas Kotelnik.
Throughout his career, Khan held unified light-welterweight world championships from 2009 to 2012, adding the IBF title in 2011. He also won the Commonwealth lightweight title from 2007 to 2008 and the WBC Silver welterweight title from 2014 to 2016. In 2016, he moved up to challenge for a middleweight world title. He retired with a record of 34 wins from 40 fights, including notable victories over opponents like Chris Algieri, Devon Alexander, and Marcos Maidana. His 2010 bout with Maidana was awarded Fight of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
Outside the ring, Khan has grown his presence in media and business. He stars alongside his wife, Faryal Makhdoom, in the reality TV show Meet the Khans: Big in Bolton, which gives audiences a behind-the-scenes look at his family life, business ventures, and philanthropic efforts. The show, which launched in 2021, has expanded his popularity and showcased his life outside of boxing.
Khan’s entrepreneurial activities since relocating to the UAE include stakes in various business ventures such as hydration drinks, combat sports promotions, training facilities and more. He also owns the Amir Khan Academy’s several locations across the world, helping to train and inspire the next generation of boxers.
Amir Khan is also deeply committed to philanthropy. His Amir Khan Foundation supports multiple charitable initiatives globally, including the Barnardo's children's charity in Britain, the Water Wells project that provides clean water to drought-stricken areas across Asia and Africa, and the #OrphanAID project in collaboration with the Shilpa Shetty Foundation to support Syrian refugees in Greece. His charitable contributions earned him the Pride of Performance Award from the President of Pakistan in 2014, and honorary rank of Captain by the Pakistan Army in 2024.
In recent years, Khan has become increasingly involved in mentoring young athletes and building his brand outside of the sport. He remains an influential figure in British and international boxing and a role model for athletes aspiring to succeed both in and out of the ring.
