Amy Goyer is an author, speaker, and consultant specializing in aging and families, with a focus on caregiving, grandparenting, and multi-generational issues. She has authored numerous publications, including "AARP’s Juggling Work and Caregiving" and "Things to Do Now That You’re…a Grandparent." A recognized media authority, she has been interviewed by major outlets such as ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR, The Doctors, The New York Times, The Washington Post, People Magazine, and various state and local newspapers and television stations.
With over 30 years of advocacy for older adults, children, and families at local, state, national, and international levels, Amy began her career as a music therapist and adult day services administrator. She later worked at the Ohio Department of Aging before joining AARP, where she led intergenerational and grandparenting programs for 15 years, including the Grandparent Information Center, a key resource for grandparent caregivers.
Currently, she writes and consults for a diverse range of clients, including AARP, Sam’s Club, MetLife, LifeWorks Strategies, InsureMyTrip.com, and GRAND Magazine. As AARP’s national family and caregiving expert, Amy is a columnist and blogger for the AARP Take Care blog. She also hosts a YouTube web series called “Taking Care,” offering actionable tips for caregivers, and maintains a vlog sharing her personal caregiving experiences.
A passionate champion for caregivers, Amy has been one her entire adult life. Beginning as a long-distance caregiver for her grandparents at age 23, her journey deepened when her mother suffered a stroke at 63. In 2009, as her mother’s health deteriorated and her father developed Alzheimer’s disease, Amy relocated from Washington, D.C. to Phoenix, Arizona, to care for her parents, while maintaining her home in D.C. She has also been supported by her sisters, who assist with caregiving.
Grief has marked her journey, including the loss of her niece Shaelee, who suffered from bipolar illness, as well as the passing of her mother and sister. Now, at 92, her father lives with her, along with his service dog, Mr. Jackson, and her sister Linda and her two sons, creating a truly multigenerational household.
Amy balances two homes, a long-distance relationship, work, and caregiving, embracing the challenges and blessings of her life. She is grateful for the support she has received throughout her journey and is committed to sharing her experiences to help others.
