Andrea Armstrong

Andrea Armstrong holds the position of Dr. Norman C. Francis Distinguished Professor of Law at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law. She is also a 2023 MacArthur Fellow. Armstrong has taught courses on various topics, including incarceration law, constitutional law, criminal procedure, and race and the law. This reflects her commitment to the exploration of these intersecting domains and her dedication to educating future legal practitioners in these areas.

Armstrong's research stands at the crossroads of race and the conditions of incarceration, public oversight of detention facilities, carceral mortality, health care, and labor. This includes her establishment of IncarcerationTransparency.org, a database and website that documents and memorializes deaths behind bars in Louisiana and supports similar efforts across the U.S. This initiative indicates Armstrong's determination to bring transparency and accountability to the prison system.

Prior to her current role, Armstrong litigated prisoners' rights issues as a Thomas Emerson fellow with David Rosen and Associates and served as a research associate at the International Center for Transitional Justice. Her work has been featured in numerous notable publications such as "The New Yorker," "The Atlantic," and "Stanford Law & Policy Review." Armstrong's combined experience and scholarship position her as a knowledgeable and authoritative voice on issues of incarceration and race in the U.S.
