Andrea Gibson

Andrea Gibson is not gentle with their truths. It is this raw fearlessness that has led them to the forefront of the spoken word movement. They are a four-time Denver Grand Slam Champion and, notably, the first winner of the Women's World Poetry Slam in 2008. Gibson was appointed Colorado's Poet Laureate by Governor Jared Polis. They have headlined prestigious performance venues coast to coast with powerful readings on war, class, gender, bullying, white privilege, sexuality, love, and spirituality. Their personal experiences, particularly with Chronic Lyme Disease and ovarian cancer, often permeate through their activism and poetry, providing a distinct voice within the LGBTQ community. They are also known for their performances at Button Poetry, universities, other venues nationwide, and Take Back the Night events.

Their work has been featured on the BBC, Air America, C-SPAN, and Free Speech TV, and, in 2010, was read by a state representative in lieu of morning prayer at the Utah State Legislature. Not only noted for their spoken word, Gibson has also published several books. These include titles such as "Pole Dancing To Gospel Hymns," "The Madness Vase," "Pansy," and "Lord of the Butterflies." Their work has also appeared in various publications and magazines like The Rumpus and The Wayfarer Magazine.

With their fifth full-length album, "FLOWER BOY," and second book, "The Madness Vase," Gibson's poems continue to be a rallying cry for action and a welcome mat at the door of the heart's most compassionate room. Their other significant works include "Hey Galaxy" and "Take Me With You." They have been interviewed by Eyezine and Autostraddle, and have been featured in podcasts, such as "The Bravest Conversation We've Had with Andrea Gibson."
