Andrew Bastawrous

Dr. Andrew Bastawrous is Co-Founder & CEO of Peek Vision, a social impact organization that utilizes smartphone technology and public health tools to help eye health organizations increase their impact. He is an Ophthalmologist (Eye Surgeon), and Professor in Global Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine where he teaches on public health for eye health and leads a research portfolio.

Dr. Bastawrous has worked and undertaken research in over twenty countries, including two years living in Kenya where he led a major eye disease study and the development and testing of Peek. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles focusing on international eye health and mobile technology in healthcare, and has co-authored four book chapters. Dr. Bastawrous has been recognized with numerous awards such as being named a TED Fellow in 2014 and delivering two main stage TED talks, which have together been viewed over 2.5 million times. He was also honored with an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours in 2023 for his contributions to global health.

Peek's solutions are actively transforming eye health in regions including Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Botswana, with ongoing collaborations with international NGOs like CBM International. The Peek Acuity app, launched on the Google Play Store in 2016, is a Class I medical device and has been utilized in over 150 countries.

The contributions of Dr. Bastawrous and Peek Vision have been acknowledged with prestigious awards from organizations like TED, Rolex, UBS, Ashoka, and the World Economic Forum. In 2018, Dr. Bastawrous was invited to deliver the Commonwealth Address in the presence of the British Royal Family, where he emphasized the critical role of international cooperation in combating avoidable blindness and vision loss.

In his ongoing role with Peek Vision, Dr. Bastawrous collaborates with major banks, health organizations, and investors to develop innovative financing models for eye health. His dedication extends beyond Peek; he has partnered with astrophysicists, National Geographic explorers, and various activists to promote global eye care. Moreover, together with his wife Madeleine, he is setting up a social enterprise micro-bakery in Kenya to provide employment and access to healthy food.
