Colonel Ann Wright’s life exemplifies dedication, courage, and conviction, both in her long military career and her influential role as a peace activist. A former United States Army officer and diplomat, Wright's journey reflects the complexities of service to her country—first through military strength and later through outspoken advocacy for peace, human rights, and accountability.

In March 2003, Wright made headlines when she resigned from the State Department in protest of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Her resignation letter, written to then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, expressed her opposition not only to the Iraq War but also to the Bush administration’s foreign policies. Wright’s resignation was a bold and controversial act—one of only three State Department officials to resign over the war. Her departure from government service marked a turning point in her life, shifting her focus toward activism and peace advocacy.

Following her resignation, Ann Wright became a prominent figure in the peace movement. She joined anti-war coalitions such as Code Pink, an organization advocating non-violent solutions to conflicts. Wright participated in protests, civil disobedience campaigns, and international missions to raise awareness of human rights violations and government accountability. Her advocacy took her around the world, including Gaza, where she protested the blockade, and countries affected by U.S. military actions, where she called for more ethical and peaceful approaches to conflict resolution.

In addition to her activism, Ann Wright has authored books and essays that chronicle her experiences and call for a shift in U.S. foreign policy. One of her most notable works is “Dissent: Voices of Conscience,” co-authored with Susan Dixon, which highlights the stories of government insiders who spoke out against unethical practices.

Ann Wright served in the U.S. Army for 13 years on active duty and an additional 16 years in the Army Reserves, rising to the rank of Colonel. Her military background is diverse and distinguished, with service in various leadership roles, including assignments with special operations forces. Wright’s military career not only showcased her commitment to leadership and national security but also equipped her with a deep understanding of international geopolitics. After retiring from active duty, Wright transitioned into diplomacy, joining the U.S. State Department. As a diplomat, she was stationed in volatile regions, including Nicaragua, Sierra Leone, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan, where she helped establish and stabilize U.S. diplomatic missions.
