Anna Malaika Tubbs

Author, advocate, educator, and scholar Anna Malaika Tubbs completed her Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Cambridge. Having grown up in diverse international settings including Dubai, Mexico, Sweden, Estonia, and Azerbaijan, Tubbs has been deeply influenced by a wide array of cultures and beliefs, fueling her motivation to unify people through the appreciation of diversity. Drawing inspiration from her mother’s global advocacy for women’s and children’s rights, she employs an intersectional approach in her scholarship and advocacy, focusing particularly on the challenges faced by women of color.

While an undergraduate at Stanford University, Tubbs emerged as a prominent voice for social justice issues. She served as president of Stanford’s Black Student Union during her sophomore year and was the Executive Director of Stanford’s Alternative Spring Break. In these capacities, she organized events aimed at addressing the needs of the Black community and raised funds for women’s clinics in the Bay Area, further nurturing her dedication to advocacy and social change.

Tubbs has made significant strides in her professional career, having authored the acclaimed "The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation," which is not only a New York Times Bestseller but also a New York Times Editors' Choice, an Amazon Editor's Choice, and one of the Best Books of 2021 by NPR and Amazon. Her TED Talk, “How Moms Shape the World,” has attracted over 1.4 million views, emphasizing her impact as a public speaker. Furthermore, Tubbs has contributed to major publications such as TIME, New York Magazine, and The Guardian, and has been featured in outlets such as Forbes and The Washington Post. She continues to expand her influence, currently working on her first fiction and recently secured deals for her next two non-fiction books. As the former First Partner of Stockton, CA, she co-authored the groundbreaking “Report on the Status of Women in Stockton,” reflecting her ongoing commitment to integrating the diverse experiences of women into policy making.
