Anthony Christian Ocampo, Ph.D. is queer Filipino American writer and sociologist. He is a Professor of Sociology and Faculty Director of the Office of Ethnic Studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Dr. Ocampo is also the Academic Director of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) and the co-host of the podcast "Professor-ing."
Dr. Ocampo is the author of two books: "Brown and Gay in LA: The Lives of Immigrant Sons" and "The Latinos of Asia: How Filipino Americans Break the Rules of Race." He has penned essays and articles for GQ, Catapult, BuzzFeed, Colorlines, Gravy, Life & Thyme, and the Chronicle of Higher Education, among others. His writing has been supported by fellowships from the Ford Foundation, Tin House, Jack Jones Literary Arts, and VONA/Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation. He is currently working on a new book, "On the Margins of Justice," which will be published by Little, Brown.
A researcher of race, immigration, and LGBTQ issues, Dr. Ocampo has published in leading journals in sociology and ethnic studies, including Ethnic and Racial Studies; Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies; Race, Ethnicity, and Education; Latino Studies; and the Journal of Asian American Studies. His academic research has received awards from several sections of the American Sociological Association, including International Migration, Latina/o Sociology, Asian and Asian American Sociology, Sexualities, and Sex and Gender. He is the founding series editor of the NYU Press Asian American Sociology series.
Dr. Ocampo’s research and social commentaries have been featured in a variety of national media outlets, such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Washington Post, NBC, NPR, Al Jazeera, BuzzFeed, and CNN, as well as international media outlets in the Philippines and Latin America. Most recently, Dr. Ocampo was featured in the Netflix documentary “White Hot: The Rise and Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch,” as he was one of the employees involved in suing the company for racially discriminatory hiring practices.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Ocampo earned his BA in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and MA in Modern Thought and Literature at Stanford University, and his MA and PhD in Sociology at UCLA.
