Archie Crowley is a trans rights activist and sociolinguist who studies the relationship between language, gender, and culture with the goal of bringing people together and working for justice for trans communities. Crowley, a professor of English at Elon University, teaches a course on language and society. Their research interests are within sociolinguistics and discourse analysis focusing on the relationship between language, gender, and identity with a specific focus on the queer and trans community.
In 2021, Crowley presented a TED Talk titled "Language around gender and identity evolves (and always has)," which has over 1.5 million views. In the talk, Crowley deconstructs common myths around language and demonstrates how language is a fluid system that naturally evolves in the direction of inclusion.
