Arturo Sandoval

Arturo Sandoval is a Cuban-American jazz trumpeter, pianist, and composer, widely regarded as one of the most celebrated and influential figures in Latin jazz.

As a solo artist, Sandoval’s versatility has spanned jazz, classical music, and film soundtracks. He has released over 30 albums, won 10 Grammy Awards, 6 Billboard Awards, and an Emmy Award for his compositions. In addition to his work as a jazz musician, Sandoval has performed with symphony orchestras and composed music for films, including the Oscar-winning score for "The Mambo Kings."

Sandoval is also a passionate educator, mentoring young musicians through his master classes and workshops. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contributions to music and culture. Throughout his career, Sandoval has remained a tireless advocate for freedom and artistic expression.

Born in Artemisa, Cuba, Sandoval grew up immersed in Cuban music and began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12. His passion for jazz developed as he secretly listened to American jazz records during a time when such music was restricted in Cuba. Influenced by legendary trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval became a master of blending Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz improvisation.

In the 1970s, Sandoval co-founded the innovative band Irakere, which fused jazz, rock, classical, and traditional Cuban music. The group gained international recognition, earning a Grammy Award and opening the doors for Sandoval’s international career. In 1981, while touring with Gillespie, Sandoval made the decision to defect from Cuba, eventually settling in the United States.
