Barkue Tubman-Zawolo

Barkue Tubman-Zawolo is the Chief of Staff, Talent and Diasporic Engagement for Essence Ventures (EV), a portfolio of brands that aims to activate a boundary-less and frictionless global Black economic ecosystem. In this position, Barkue is responsible for streamlining efficiencies and operations across the EV portfolio. She is also focused on bridging the gap between Sub-Saharan Africa and United States ESSENCE audiences.

Acknowledged by Fast Company as a “Brands That Matter” 2023 Honoree, Essence Ventures brands include: Essence Communications, the leading media, technology and commerce company dedicated to Black women and communities; AFROPUNK, a multi-medium platform that celebrates Black expression and individuality, now and in the future; Beautycon, an experiential and content-focused platform that transcends traditional beauty standards, promoting an individualized and empowered understanding of beauty; and Essence Studios, a production studio and original content hub committed to authentic Black storytelling, from creation to sharing and beyond.

Tubman-Zawolo is also the founder of MBL International Group, a boutique creative, experiential and strategic partnership agency with a focus on the global African diaspora. She uses her leadership experience, worldwide network of connections and entrepreneurial drive to bring Africa into the global spotlight through advocacy, partnerships and outreach. Her strong connections in Africa and the West, plus her commitment to excellence, have positioned MBL as one of the most sought-after experiential and branding agencies in West Africa.

Prior to joining Essence Ventures, Tubman-Zawolo built a successful career in the music industry. She is also the founder and owner of Peace Cafe, an incubator/accelerator/co-working space and cafe that provides an enabling environment for entrepreneurs, professionals and creatives to eat, work, meet and grow in Liberia.

Tubman-Zawolo proudly serves on the Board of The Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Center for Women and Development. She is producing the documentary "Ma Ellen," a film highlighting the vital stories of women in leadership, legacy building, and the remarkable life of Liberia’s Iron Lady, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
