Brent James

Brent James is known internationally for his expertise in clinical quality improvement, patient safety, and the necessary infrastructure that underpins successful improvement efforts, such as culture change, data systems, payment methods, and management roles.

He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and has played a significant role in that organization’s critical works on quality and patient safety. He serves as a Clinical Professor at the Clinical Excellence Research Center, part of the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

James holds adjunct faculty appointments at several esteemed institutions: - Clinical Professor, Harvard School of Public Health (Health Policy and Management) - Adjunct Professor, University of Utah David Eccles School of Business - Adjunct Professor, University of Utah School of Medicine (Family Medicine; Biomedical Informatics)

He is a Fellow of the American College of Physician Executives and currently serves as a Senior Advisor at Health Catalyst and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, as well as a Senior Fellow at the Leavitt Group. Formerly, he was the Chief Quality Officer and Executive Director at the Institute for Healthcare Delivery Research at Intermountain Healthcare.

Through the Intermountain Advanced Training Program in Clinical Practice Improvement, James has educated over 5,000 healthcare professionals, fostering over 50 sister training programs worldwide. He continues to lead the upgraded Mastering Clinical Quality / Leading Clinical Change program at Health Catalyst.

His numerous awards include the 2018 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety & Quality Individual Award and the Deming Cup in 2011 from Columbia University School of Business. He has been consistently recognized by both Modern Physician and Modern Healthcare as one of the most influential figures in healthcare.

James holds degrees in Computer Science, Medical Biology, Medicine, and Statistics. He is actively involved in various non-profit boards focused on clinical improvement and patient safety, contributing his vast experience and insights to advance these crucial fields.
