Bruce Mau

Bruce Mau is a Canadian designer renowned for his broad and innovative approach encompassing multiple disciplines in design. Initially starting as a graphic designer, Mau's interests and projects expanded into architecture, art, museums, film, eco-environmental design, and conceptual philosophy. His work often explores the intersections of design and future trends, reflecting his keen insights into how design can influence global challenges.

From 1985 to 2010, Mau was the creative director of Bruce Mau Design (BMD), and in 2003, he co-founded the Institute Without Boundaries in collaboration with the School of Design at George Brown College in Toronto. His commitment to practical education and actionable solutions in design continued with the co-founding of The Massive Change Network in Chicago in 2010 alongside Bisi Williams. Mau's engagement in education extended to his roles as the associate Cullinan professor at Rice University School of Architecture from 1996 to 1999, a thesis advisor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design, an artist in residence at California Institute of the Arts, and a visiting scholar at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

Mau's influence in the design industry is further underscored by his authorship of several books, including "Massive Change," which delve into his philosophy and approaches to design. His accolades include the Chrysler Award for Design Innovation in 1998, the Toronto Arts Award for Architecture and Design in 1999, and an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2001. He is an honorary fellow of the Ontario College of Art & Design and a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 2015, Mau joined Freeman as Chief Design Officer to propel innovation in the brand experience sector. His contributions to design thinking and innovation were recognized with the Cooper Hewitt 2016, National Design Award for Design Mind. Mau's role as a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council further emphasizes his ongoing commitment to influencing future trends and innovations in design.
