Bruce Sterling

Bruce Sterling is a science fiction author known for his novels, short fiction, and editorship of the "Mirrorshades" anthology. He was a proponent and instigator of the cyberpunk sub-genre. He is also a journalist, design critic, Internet maven, and cyberspace theorist.

Sterling's first science fiction story, "Man-Made Self," was sold in 1976. He has authored ten science fiction novels including "Schismatrix," "Islands In The Net," and "Heavy Weather." His notable nonfiction works include "The Hacker Crackdown: Law and Disorder on the Electronic Frontier," "Tomorrow Now: Envisioning the Next Fifty Years," and "Shaping Things." In 2005 and 2011, he served as the "visionary in residence" at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. In 2008, he was the guest curator for the Share Festival of Digital Art and Culture in Torino, Italy, and the visionary in residence at the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. He is a contributing editor at Wired magazine, where he covers a range of topics including politics, globalization, technology, and security.

Sterling spent several years in India as a child and maintains a fondness for Bollywood films. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in journalism in 1976. In 2003, he was appointed Professor at the European Graduate School where he taught summer intensive courses on media and design. Over the years, Sterling has lived in various locations including Belgrade, Turin, and Ibiza. He continues to travel extensively, giving speeches and participating in conferences, while also making appearances on television shows like Nightline and The Late Show. His work and insights have been featured in respected publications such as Time, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.
