Byron D. Brooks, M.A. Biography
Being born in prison and formerly homeless for two years at the start of his collegiate journey, Byron Brooks’ life’s journey has been one of refusing to be defined as a statistic, breaking through obstacles, and defying the odds set before him by a systemically racist system established to see people like him, and who look like him, fail. As an activist, scholar, and agent of change, his goal is to embrace and spread the ideals of “The Talented Tenth,” publicized by Dr. Du Bois, and also the philosophy of Ubuntu, an African Proverb that translates: "I am because WE are!" Brooks is a supporter and student of Black Liberation Theology and believes that true ministry is the connection to the people more so than the pulpit. His hope is to dismantle the systemic framework of racism, power, privilege, and oppression not only in the realm of higher education but in society as a whole.
Byron is a proud Detroit native, anti-racist practitioner, and member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. His impact has reached millions across the nation: leading a National Day of Service Initiative for the Biden-Harris Administration, fighting homelessness across the country, and inspiring change agents across the country.
