CJ Box is the author of 30 novels, including the popular Joe Pickett series and several stand-alone novels. His work has been notably recognized in the literary world, with "Blue Heaven" receiving the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 2009. His debut novel, "Open Season," from the Joe Pickett series, also gained significant recognition, winning the Anthony Award, the Macavity Award, the Gumshoe Award, and the Barry Award, all in the Best First Novel category. This novel was also listed in The New York Times "Notable Books" of 2001. In addition to these awards, he has received the Prix Calibre 38, the Maltese Falcon Award, and two further Barry Awards.
In 2016, the National Cowboy Museum honored him with the Western Heritage Award for Literature. The 2010 Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association also recognized him for his fiction work. One of his more recent accolades is the Falcon Award in 2021 for "Breaking Point." His work is internationally renowned, with over ten million copies sold in the U.S. and translations available in 27 languages.
Box's novels have been adapted into two television drama series. "Big Sky," adapted from his novel "The Highway," premiered on ABC in November 2020. In 2021, Paramount Television Studios began production of a ten-episode television adaptation of Box's Joe Pickett novels, starring Michael Dorman as Joe Pickett. The series, "Joe Pickett," was renewed for a second season in February 2022. Box is an Executive Producer for both series. His latest novel, "Three-Inch Teeth," the 24th in the Joe Pickett series, debuted at #2 on the New York Times Bestseller list and #1 on the Apple Ebooks Bestseller list in February of 2024.
A native of Wyoming, Box has worn many hats throughout his career, including work as a ranch hand, surveyor, fishing guide, small town newspaper reporter, and editor. He also owned an international tourism marketing firm with his wife, Laurie. In 2008, Box's contributions were recognized within his home state when he was awarded the "BIG WYO" Award from the state tourism industry. A passionate outdoorsman, Box has spent much of his life exploring Wyoming and the Mountain West. He served on the Board of Directors for the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo and the Wyoming Office of Tourism. He and his wife Laurie live on their ranch in Wyoming, where they enjoy the company of their three daughters and four grandchildren.
