Carey Mulligan is an English actress. She is the recipient of numerous awards and nominations, including a British Academy Film Award, a Critics' Choice Award and nominations for three Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award. She has also received the London Film Critics' Circle Award for British Actress of the Year in 2009, and the Vancouver Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in 2009. In 2020, Mulligan won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead.
Mulligan made her professional acting debut on stage in the 2004 Kevin Elyot play "Forty Winks" at the Royal Court Theatre. Her film debut came with a supporting role in the romantic drama Pride & Prejudice, followed by roles in television, including the drama series "Bleak House" and a guest appearance in "Doctor Who." Mulligan made her Broadway debut in the 2008 revival of the Anton Chekhov play "The Seagull," which earned her an Ian Charleson Commendation Award.
Mulligan's breakthrough role came as a 1960s schoolgirl in the coming-of-age drama film An Education, for which she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and garnered her first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. She went on to establish herself as one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation, with roles in the dystopian romance Never Let Me Go, action drama Drive, which earned her a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, erotic drama Shame, and romantic drama The Great Gatsby. In 2015, Mulligan was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance in the Broadway revival of David Hare's "Skylight." In 2018, she starred in the Netflix limited series "Collateral" and Paul Dano's acclaimed drama film Wildlife. She also appeared as a Detective Inspector in the BBC Two limited series Collateral and off-Broadway in the solo show "Girls and Boys."
In recent years, Mulligan has continued to make impactful contributions on screen. For her portrayal of a vigilante in the thriller Promising Young Woman, for which she also served as an executive producer, Mulligan received a second nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and won the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress. In 2021, she replaced Nicole Kidman in the film The Dig. In 2022, she portrayed Megan Twohey, one of the real-life New York Times reporters who broke the Harvey Weinstein scandal, in the film She Said. She took on the role of Felicia Montealegre in the biopic "Maestro" in 2023, which garnered her her third Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
Off-screen, Mulligan has been an ambassador for Alzheimer's Society since 2012, and an ambassador for War Child since 2014, visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo in this role.
