Carl Winter

Dr. Carl Winter combines his background as a scientist and educator with his musical talents to provide unique, humorous, and memorable presentations concerning food and health.Dr. Winter is the Director of the FoodSafe Program at the University of California, Davis and holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry and a B.S. in Environmental Toxicology. He has authored more than 100 scientific articles and two books on topics relating to food safety and health and has frequently provided invited testimony on food safety issues for the U.S. Congress.

While internationally recognized for his scientific expertise, Dr. Winter is even better known as the "Elvis of E. coli" and the "Sinatra of Salmonella" thanks to his colorful and humorous parodies of contemporary songs that he uses to educate a variety of audiences about food and health. As a performer in high demand, he has rocked audiences throughout the country with more than 200 interactive live performances while more than 20,000 of his self-produced "Still Stayin' Alive" CDs have been distributed throughout the world.

Dr. Winter recently received the 2009 NSF International Food Safety Leadership Award in Education and Training and was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists in 2008. He received the Hod Ogden Award from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control for his "innovative and creative musical approach to educate the public about food safety" in 2003. In addition to his musical performances, he provides frequent lectures on food safety, organic foods, and risk assessment to scientific and public audiences throughout the country and teaches communication skills courses for graduate students at the University of California and for outside clients.
