Carol DAmico leads a team of directors of school engagement and works with the state leaders and affiliate directors in each state to support Project Lead The Way's (PLTW) implementation in the Eastern region of the United States.
Carol comes to PLTW as a leader in education at the local, state, and national levels. She is serving as a member of Presidential-nominee Mitt Romney's education committee as a co-chair of workforce training. Previously, D'Amico served as Assistant Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education for the United States Department of Education. She was Executive Vice President and Chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana. She also served as President and CEO of Conexus Indiana.
Additionally, she has chaired and served on a number of boards, including the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity, the National Assessment Governing Board, the National Board for Education Sciences, and the Commission on the Future of Higher Education.
Appointed by President Bush in 2001 Dr. D'Amico served as the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Vocational and Adult Education until June 2003. She served as principal spokesperson and leading advisor to the President and Secretary of Education on all matters related to high school reform, community/technical colleges and adult literacy. President Bush also nominated her to the National Board for Education Sciences, and she is a member of the Secretary's Commission on Quality and Integrity in Higher Education.
Dr. D'Amico served as the Dean of Workforce, Economic, and Community Development at Ivy Tech State College from January 1999 to July 2001. She oversaw the College's programs for workforce development, continuing education and economic development activities.
Dr. D'Amico is also a Senior Adjunct Fellow with Hudson Institute, an internationally acclaimed public policy organization, which she joined in 1990. She served as co-director of the Center for Workforce and is the co-author of Workforce 2020, a book describing the challenges and opportunities for American corporations and workers in the early twenty-first century.
Before joining Hudson, Carol D'Amico was a Policy Advisor for the Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, focusing on strategies to improve public education in Indiana. Dr. D'Amico also served as the Senior Program Analyst for the Indiana General Assembly, where she conducted research on state government issues.
Dr. D'Amico holds a doctorate in leadership and policy studies from Indiana University, where she also earned a master's degree in adult education and organizational development.
Dr. D'Amico has been cited in numerous publications including The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, USA Today, The Indianapolis Star, Indianapolis Business Journal, and Education Week and comments frequently on education issues for local and national television and radio programs. She also has testified to Congress and several legislatures on job training and education issues.
