Chin-Teng Lin

Distinguished Professor Chin-Teng Lin is a leading figure in artificial intelligence (AI) and brain-computer interface (BCI) research. He currently serves as a Distinguished Professor and Co-Director of the Australian Artificial Intelligence Institute at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Australia.

Professor Lin completed his Bachelor of Science at National Chiao-Tung University (NCTU), Taiwan. He went on to earn his master's and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Purdue University. Beyond his role at UTS, he holds honorary positions as Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NCTU and International Faculty at the University of California, San Diego.

Professor Lin's research interests encompass neural networks, fuzzy systems, brain-computer interfaces, multimedia information processing, cognitive neuro-engineering, and human-machine teaming. He has authored over 425 journal papers, including approximately 200 IEEE journal papers, which have collectively garnered more than 32,000 citations.

Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Lin has made significant contributions to biologically inspired information systems. His work has been recognized with Fellowships from both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2005 and the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA) in 2012. In 2017, he was honored with the IEEE Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award. His leadership roles include serving as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems (2011-2016) and holding positions on the Board of Governors for various IEEE societies.

In October 2024, Professor Lin delivered a TED Talk titled "The Mind-Reading Potential of AI," where he demonstrated how brain-computer interfaces can translate neural signals into text, showcasing the possibilities of thought-based communication. His pioneering work continues to influence the development of AI and BCI technologies, advancing our understanding of human-machine interactions and the potential of AI to interpret and respond to human thoughts.
