Born July 9, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri. After studying agriculture and drama at the University of Missouri, Cooper moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. He made several notable performances in feature films, including Matewan, Money Train and Lone Star, before impressing critics with his portrayal of a homophobic Marine Corps Colonel in American Beauty. He proved himself again in 2002 in the reality-bending film Adaptation. His performance as the eccentric plant collector John Laroche earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2005, Cooper appeared in three critically acclaimed films: Jarhead, Capote and Syriana.
In 2017, Cooper received a Tony Award nomination for best actor in the play “A Doll’s House, Part 2.”
