Chris Downey Biography
Christopher Downey is an architect, planner, and consultant with over 30 years of practice, continuing without sight since 2008. Today, he is dedicated to creating more helpful and enriching environments for the blind and visually impaired.
He specializes in universal design for projects specifically for the blind and visually impaired, including blind rehabilitation centers, eye clinics, and schools for the blind. He also consults on projects that are critical yet challenging to them, such as museums and transit facilities. His work ranges from a new Department of Veterans Affairs blind rehabilitation center, to renovations of housing for the blind in New York City, and to the new Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco.
As one of the few practicing blind architects in the world, Chris has been featured in local, national and international media stories, including “60 Minutes,” and speaks regularly about architecture and visual impairment.
Downey teaches periodically for the University of California, Berkeley, Department of Architecture and speaks internationally about disability and design. He serves on the California Commission on Disability Access and chairs the board of Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
