Clay Chandler

Clay Chandler is a best-selling author and editor, an award-winning journalist, and the Asia Editor and Co-Chair of Fortune Global Forum at global media company Fortune. With two decades of experience living and working in Asia, he has a deep knowledge of the region’s largest three economies: China, Japan and India. At Fortune, Chandler oversees Fortune's editorial operations throughout Asia, including the Chinese-language edition, Fortune China. He also contributes features, commentary and news analysis to the English-language magazine and fortune.com.

Chandler has spent most of his career covering business and economics in the US and Asia as senior writer for The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and Fortune magazine. He also worked for many years at McKinsey & Company helping senior partners develop and share firm knowledge, insight and ideas. While at McKinsey, Chandler led a variety of high profile projects for the firm, including McKinsey’s Reimagining essay series, which he conceived, developed, and edited.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Chandler was an award-­winning journalist. In his previous stint as Asia Editor at Fortune from 2001 to 2008, he contributed cover stories from around the region and represented the magazine at high-­profile gatherings including its Global Forum and Brainstorm conferences, as well as meetings of the World Economic Forum in China.

Chandler's editorial assignments have taken him to every major Asian economy; Chandler has lived in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai. He is a former fellow of Harvard’s John King Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, a member of the Hong Kong Forum, and serves as a director of the Harvard Club of Hong Kong.
