Derek Lowe

Derek Lowe, a former professional baseball pitcher, made significant strides in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1997 to 2013. His career began with the Seattle Mariners before moving on to the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and New York Yankees, and culminating with the Texas Rangers. Lowe earned his reputation as a two-time All-Star (2000, 2002) and a World Series champion in 2004 with the Red Sox, with whom he threw a no-hitter in 2002. His leadership in wins in 2006 and saves in 2000 further cemented his standing in the league.

Lowe's tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2005 to 2008 saw him as the opening-day starter for three years. Notably, in 2005, he pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a single hit in a complete game victory. He moved to the Atlanta Braves in 2009 with a four-year, $60 million deal, where he hit his first home run in 2011. That same year, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians and recorded his first shutout in seven years in 2012. His final professional year was with the New York Yankees, in which he achieved a 3.04 ERA in 17 appearances before his retirement in July 2013.

Off the field, Lowe is known for his advocacy work, particularly in relation to cancer-related causes. He has collaborated with organizations such as the Melanoma Foundation of New England and The Prostate Cancer Foundation to spread awareness about the diseases and urge fans to get regular screenings. He has also shown an interest in golf, winning the January 2022 LPGA Tournament of Champions Celebrity Division tournament.
