Derek Sanderson

Derek "Turk" Sanderson's professional hockey career commenced in 1967 with the Boston Bruins, following a period of hard work and perseverance through the Juniors. His efforts were rewarded when he was named the Calder Memorial Trophy winner as the Rookie of the Year. Over the course of his career, Sanderson helped lead the Bruins to Stanley Cup victories in 1970 and 1972, becoming a key figure in the team's success during those years.

Sanderson was not just known for his achievements on the ice but also for his charismatic and flamboyant personality, which made him a notable figure off the ice as well. He became known as the "Joe Namath of hockey," appearing on "Johnny Carson's Tonight," "Donahue," "60 Minutes," and "Merv Griffin." He also hosted his own television show and appeared in three Hollywood films. His literary contributions include co-authoring two books and the autobiography "Crossing the Line: The Outrageous Story of a Hockey Original" in 2012, where he shares his experiences in and out of hockey.

After retiring from professional hockey in 1978, Sanderson faced personal challenges, including struggles with substance abuse. He eventually made a life-altering decision to pursue sobriety in 1980, a journey he navigated independently. Post-retirement, he transitioned to a role as a hockey broadcaster for New England Sports Network and later served as the Director of the Sports Investment Group at State Street Global Advisors. Today, Sanderson remains actively involved in charitable activities, utilizing his experiences to influence and assist others positively.
