Digger Phelps Biography
Digger Phelps is a retired basketball coach and television analyst, known for his charismatic personality and strategic coaching style. Phelps began his career at the University of Pennsylvania in the mid-1960s before moving on to Fordham University, where he served as head coach from 1970 to 1971. His breakthrough came when he took over as the head coach of the University of Notre Dame men's basketball team in 1971.
During his 20-year tenure at Notre Dame, Phelps became the winningest coach in school history, amassing a 393-197 record. He led the Fighting Irish to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and reached the Final Four in 1978. Known for his distinctive sideline presence, Phelps became a legendary figure in college basketball.
Phelps retired from coaching in 1991 and transitioned to sports broadcasting as a college basketball analyst for ESPN. His insightful commentary and engaging style endeared him to fans, and he became a familiar face during March Madness broadcasts.
Off the court, Phelps has been involved in various philanthropic activities, supporting causes related to education and community development. His passion for the game and dedication to fostering young talent have left an indelible mark on the landscape of college basketball.
