Doug Williams

Doug Williams is a football executive, former quarterback, and coach with a legacy shaped by his time with the Washington Redskins. His performance during Super Bowl XXII was a milestone in sports history as he became the first black quarterback to both start and win a Super Bowl. Williams earned the title of Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP), having broken two Super Bowl passing records: accumulating a total of 340 yards and becoming the first to throw four touchdowns in a single quarter. His prowess on the field was recognized early in his career, being named a first-team All-American in 1977 and later being inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.

Williams' contributions to football extend beyond his personal achievements as a player. He served as head coach of the Grambling State Tigers and held executive roles with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Virginia Destroyers, and Washington Redskins. His coaching record includes leading the Grambling State Tigers to three consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference titles from 2000 to 2002. In his executive roles, Williams demonstrated a keen eye for talent, serving as the director of professional scouting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and later being promoted to Senior Vice President of Player Personnel for the Washington Redskins in 2017.

Currently, Williams serves as a Senior Advisor for the Washington Football Team, now known as the Washington Commanders. This role builds on his storied career as both a player and an executive in the sport. His enduring influence on the game is evident in his induction into the Black College Football Hall of Fame in 2011 and his status as a Walter Camp Alumni of the Year in 2015. As the first African-American quarterback taken in the first round of an NFL draft, Williams' career is a testament to his talent and determination, making significant strides in breaking down racial barriers in American football.
