Dr. Chris Lowe

Dr. Chris Lowe is a leading figure in marine biology, particularly known for his expertise on sharks. He holds the position of professor and director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). Over his career, he has focused on developing grounded information for both the public and scientific community, addressing the misconceptions surrounding sharks.

Lowe's academic journey includes a Bachelor of Arts in marine biology from Barrington College in Rhode Island, a Master of Science in biology from CSULB, and a doctorate in zoology from the University of Hawaii, which he completed in 1998. His doctoral research explored the bioenergetics of juvenile hammerhead sharks. After completing his studies, he returned to CSULB to teach and lead the Shark Lab. His research primarily investigates the movement, behavior, and physiology of sharks, rays, and gamefishes utilizing advanced techniques such as acoustic and satellite telemetry.

Lowe has been studying juvenile white sharks along the Southern California coast for over a decade and has recently been involved in developing underwater robots for autonomously tracking sharks and gamefishes. He has received several accolades for his academic contributions, including the CSULB’s 2008-2009 Outstanding Professor Award and the 2012 Impact in Research Award.
