Dr. John Nelson

John Nelson, MD, MPH is a Senior Advisor and member of FuturePanel at Leavitt Partners. He brings more than three decades of medical practice and health policy experience to the Leavitt Partners' team. He is a past president of the American Medical Association (2004-2005) and a board certified obstetrician and gynecologist with over 30 years of clinical practice.

Dr. Nelson has held numerous appointments during his distinguished medical career. Most recently, he served the National Institutes of Health as a member of the Advisory Committee to the Director and on the Council of Public Representatives. Prior to his service with NIH, Dr. Nelson served in a long-term leadership role with the American Medical Association, the country's largest association of physicians and medical students. He has served in a variety of capacities with AMA including, Member of the Board of Trustees, Secretary/ Treasurer, and President.

Dr. Nelson was a founding co-chair of the Commission to End Health Care Disparities, the Deputy Director for the Utah Department of Health, and the staff lead for the Utah Health Policy Options Commission. He is a current member of the Board for Operation Kids and the Advisory Committee to the Department of Biology, Utah State University. In 2005, Dr. Nelson was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, presented by the University of Utah School of Medicine and has received numerous other awards from a diverse group of organizations which have benefitted from his diligent service.

Dr. Nelson graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine. After residency, Dr. Nelson joined Bryner Clinic as an OB/GYN from 1975-1990, after which he opened a private practice in Salt Lake City from 1990-2006. Dr. Nelson went back to the University of Utah School of Medicine to achieve his masters of public health in 1993.
