Dr. Michael Burry is known for his unique insights and predictions in the financial world. After founding the hedge fund Scion Capital, Burry's keen understanding of the market landscape allowed his fund to earn extraordinary profits for investors. Notably, Burry was among the first to predict the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007-2010, a pivotal event in global finance.
In 2008, Burry liquidated his credit default swap short positions, avoiding the economic downturn of that year and the subsequent bailouts. Burry's adept decision-making led to a personal profit of $100 million and a profit of over $700 million for his remaining investors. In 2013, he reopened his hedge fund under the name Scion Asset Management, shifting his investment focus to water, gold, and farmland.
Burry initiated short positions on Tesla in December 2020, predicting a similar collapse to that of the housing bubble. As of May 2021, he held put options on over 800,000 shares of Tesla. Burry's most recent venture saw his hedge fund placing a $1.6 billion bet on a US stock market crash in August 2023. Burry's accomplishments and unique approach to investing were highlighted in the 2015 film "The Big Short," where he was portrayed by Christian Bale.
