Dr. Ronald Kotler is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He is the co-author of two books, 365 Ways to Get a Good Night’s Sleep and 20 Years Younger.
For something that we all do every night, few people know the real secrets behind getting a good night’s sleep, and what it can do for your long-term health. Kotler, cofounder of the Pennsylvania Hospital Sleep Disorders Center and one of the most esteemed sleep medicine experts in country, tells us how we can maximize the benefits that we get once our heads hit the pillow. In 20 Years Younger, co-authored with Bob Greene, Kotler reveals ways that people can modify their sleep environment to help fight the adverse effects of aging and subsequently look and feel younger.
Using his experience from nearly 30 years of studying and practicing sleep medicine, Kotler breaks down the different cycles that our bodies go through while asleep, and teaches audiences how to avoid restless nights. In his talks, he touches upon the different experiences that people have, including dreams, issues with snoring, increases and decreases in energy throughout the day, and whether or not napping is a good idea.
Kotler joined the staff at Pennsylvania Hospital as a pulmonary/critical care medicine physician. Along with Dr. Charles Cantor, he started the Pennsylvania Hospital Sleep Disorders Center. Through the years, Kotler and Cantor have treated thousands of patients with various sleep disorders. Additionally, Kotler is actively involved in the treatment of patients with respiratory disorders and critical illness. He has served on regional and national advisory boards for the pharmaceutical industry. He has also served as an expert witness in medical malpractice cases throughout the United States.
Kotler graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, after which he trained at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia for three years in internal medicine. He returned to the University of Pennsylvania for a Fellowship in Pulmonary Disease. During his fellowship, he developed an interest in sleep-related breathing disorders. He is now board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and sleep medicine.
