Edward Thomas McCaffrey is a former professional football player known for his role as a wide receiver during his 13-year career in the National Football League. McCaffrey played for the New York Giants (1991–1993), San Francisco 49ers (1994), and the Denver Broncos (1995–2003), where he won three Super Bowl championships in Super Bowls XXIX, XXXII, and XXXIII and was selected to start in the 1998 Pro Bowl.
Regarded as one of the best blocking wide receivers of all time, McCaffrey set a then-Broncos record for most receptions in a season with 101 catches in 2000. He retired in 2004 as one of just 31 players in NFL history to win a Super Bowl with two different teams (S.F. & Denver) and one of only 13 to win one in each conference. McCaffrey, who is a member of the Denver Broncos 50th Anniversary Team, finished his NFL career with 565 receptions, 7,422 receiving yards, and 55 touchdowns. He entered the NFL in 1991 as a third-round draft choice of the New York Giants (No. 83 overall) out of Stanford University, where he earned first-team All-America honors in 1990.
Upon retiring from professional football, McCaffrey transitioned into coaching. He first served as Head Football Coach at Valor Christian High School from 2018 to 2019 before being appointed head football coach at Northern Colorado in 2020 – a position he held until 2022. In addition to coaching, McCaffrey founded SportsEddy, a series of youth sports camps, in the summer of 2000. He also runs the award-winning Dare-to-Play Camp for athletes with Down Syndrome.
McCaffrey and his wife, Lisa, are co-founders of the McCaffrey Family Foundation, which seeks to assist children facing academic or financial hardships. McCaffrey also served as Commissioner and Co-Founder of the Pacific Pro Football League and as the new color analyst for 850 KOA, the flagship station of the Denver Broncos Radio Network. He has launched his own brand of mustard and horseradish sauce.
McCaffrey was born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where he played high school football at Allentown Central Catholic High School. He played college football at Stanford University in California, where he met his wife, Lisa, and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Together, McCaffrey and his wife Lisa have raised four sons, who have all played football. Their eldest son, Max, played college football at Duke and was on the rosters of several NFL teams. Their son Christian is a standout football player and currently plays for the San Francisco 49ers. Their sons Dylan and Luke played college football at Michigan and Northern Colorado, and Nebraska and Rice University, respectively.
