Ed O'Brien Biography
Ed O'Brien studies how people perceive time and change, particularly in terms of hedonic experiences. His research has been published in top journals like Personality and Social Psychology Review, Psychological Science, and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. A number of media outlets have featured his research, including NPR, The Atlantic, TIME, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Big Think.
O’Brien earned a Ph.D. (2014) and a Master’s degree (2011) in social psychology, both from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he worked with Phoebe Ellsworth and Norbert Schwarz. At UM, his accolades included a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, the Philip Brickman Memorial Prize for best predoctoral research program, and the Pat Gurin Distinguished Lecture Award.
O’Brien was born and raised on the east coast and attended Philadelphia’s prestigious Saint Joseph’s Preparatory high school (2005), and subsequently Saint Joseph’s University where he received a Bachelor of Science summa cum laude in psychology (2009). As the top member of his graduating class, he was the only student who earned the distinction “University Scholar" based on grades, coursework, research, and extracurricular activity.
