Grandmaster Flash

Grandmaster Flash, a Barbadian-American DJ, rapper, and producer, is recognized as the founder of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, an influential group that made history as the first rap ensemble to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. His childhood fascination with his father's record collection sparked his interest in DJing, leading him to develop groundbreaking techniques that would revolutionize the music industry. Notably, Grandmaster Flash invented the Quick Mix Theory, which gave birth to cutting and scratching, and the slipmat, both pivotal to the evolution of hip hop.

His passion for music led him to create the group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, which later became a household name in the hip hop scene, gaining recognition for their skillful raps. They released several hit singles, including "The Message" in 1982, the first hip hop recording to be added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. As an active contributor to the culture, Grandmaster Flash also ventured into acting, featuring in the movie "Wild Style" in 1982, and hosting a weekly show on Sirius Satellite Radio called "Friday Night Fire with Grandmaster Flash."

In addition to his broad influence in music, Grandmaster Flash has been honored with several awards and accolades for his contributions to hip hop. He became the first hip hop artist to receive the Polar Music Prize in 2019 and was honored with the BET "I Am Hip Hop Icon" award in 2006. His commitment to his craft earned him honorary doctorate degrees in Fine Arts from Buffalo State University in 2022, and in music from Lehman College in 2023. New York City further recognized his impact by issuing a proclamation declaring August 4th as Grandmaster Flash Day.
