Greg Fonzo

Greg Fonzo, PhD, is an assistant professor at Dell Medical School's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and co-director of the Center for Psychedelic Research and Therapy at The University of Texas at Austin. He also holds a courtesy assistant professorship in psychology at the university.

Dr. Fonzo's broad research focus is on understanding the brain processes underlying the emergence and treatment of affective disturbances in post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression, and on utilizing this information to design novel interventions, particularly psychedelic-assisted therapies and neuromodulation. He is also invested in identifying neural mechanisms of therapeutic effects of existing treatments like psychotherapy and medications, for the development of novel brain modulation approaches.

Ultimately, Dr. Fonzo aims to improve clinical care for individuals with stress-related affective disorders by discovering how current treatments work, identifying who is best suited for particular treatments, and designing novel mechanism-focused interventions targeted to engage specific brain circuits of interest. His vision is to provide every individual with an effective, individually tailored, biologically informed evidence-based treatment.

Dr. Fonzo earned his dual bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology from the University of Georgia Honors Program. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the San Diego State University/University of California, San Diego, Joint Doctoral Program and completed his clinical internship at the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
