Greg Lemond Biography
Greg LeMond is a former cyclist, two-time Professional World Champion, and three-time Tour de France winner (1986, 1989, 1990). He remains the first and only American Tour de France winner. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2020, our nation's highest civilian honor, in recognition of his contributions to the nation as an athlete, activist, and role model.
Well known for his racing success, he is also widely recognized as the most innovative cyclist ever. He ushered in the modern era of cycling. He was the first cyclist to win the Tour de France on a carbon fiber bike. LeMond was a co-inventor of the first hard shell cycling helmet for Giro, the first athlete to use Oakley sunglasses, and the introducer of the cycling computer, heart rate monitor, clip-less cycling pedals, and data-based training programs, which changed the sport of cycling. He has notably always been outspoken in the battle against doping in sports.
LeMond is now working on opportunities as the founder of LeMond Bicycles and LeMond Carbon.
