Gus Van Sant

Gus Van Sant is an American film director, screenwriter, painter, photographer, musician and author. He is a two-time nominee of the Academy Award for Best Director for "Good Will Hunting" in 1997 and "Milk" in 2008, both of which also received Best Picture nominations. His film "Elephant", part of his "Death Trilogy", won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003. Van Sant has also been active in arthouse cinema since 2003, directing and producing films such as "Gerry" and "Last Days".

Van Sant identifies as a gay man, and is often credited with helping shape the gay filmmaking community. His films often explore themes concerning homosexuality and other marginalized subcultures. His filmography includes a diverse range of films including "Mala Noche" (1985), "Drugstore Cowboy" (1989), "My Own Private Idaho" (1991), and "To Die For" (1995). These films have seen him work with high profile actors such as Matt Dillon, Nicole Kidman, Joaquin Phoenix, and Matthew McConaughey.

Van Sant began his career directing television commercials in the Pacific Northwest, and has since expanded to directing and executive producing television shows, including "Boss", "The Devil You Know", "When We Rise," and "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans".

Van Sant is also a published author, having penned one novel, "Pink", and a book of photography called "108 Portraits." He has released two musical albums and directed music videos for artists like David Bowie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Stone Temple Pilots. Van Sant's films and contributions to the arts are recognized by the Academy Film Archive, which preserves his work. He is based out of Portland, Oregon.
