Gwen Carr

After the tragic death of her son, Eric Garner, due to an illegal chokehold by New York City police officers, Gwen Carr became a prominent figure in advocating against police brutality. Garner's death on Staten Island, captured on video as he said "I can't breathe," has become a rallying cry for justice, escalating awareness around the treatment of African Americans by law enforcement. His death has spurred many to routinely record interactions with police.

Gwen Carr, previously a longtime employee of both the post office and New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, has since focused her efforts on justice and civil rights activism. As a recognized member of the Mothers of the Movement, she tirelessly works towards reform in the ways law enforcement interacts with the Black community in America. Carr has also engaged directly with legislative processes, petitioning for the appointment of a special prosecutor in cases involving police brutality in New York.

In addition to her activism, Carr is now a speaker on topics related to justice and civil rights and works closely with the Justice Committee to advocate for victims of police brutality. Her personal experiences and dedication to these causes make her a poignant and influential voice in discussions about police reform and racial equality in the United States.
