Hal Paz, M.D., M.S. is a senior executive, board director, and strategic advisor in the healthcare industry. Paz has also played a pivotal role in leading transformative initiatives at CVSHealth/Aetna and as CEO of three prominent health systems. At Aetna, he served on the Executive Committee as EVP & CMO, leading clinical strategy and policy for global operations. He restructured Health & Clinical Services, launched the innovative AetnaCare ecosystem, and played a crucial role in the merger with CVSHealth. AetnaCare pioneered groundbreaking partnerships with ACOs, health systems, and pharma and device companies, including Merck and Medtronic, through value-based agreements.
After working at CVSHealth, Paz became CEO of the $5B Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. There, he implemented a transformative strategic plan, recruited nationally acclaimed healthcare leaders, and established innovative collaborations with One Medical, Dispatch Health, Alternate Health Solutions, and Teladoc Health. Paz spearheaded a $3B investment to construct new outpatient and hospital facilities, significantly expanding access to cutting-edge care across Ohio. Under his leadership, the health system achieved recognition as the #4 "Best Employers for Diversity 2020" by Forbes, emerging as a national leader in employee health and well-being.
Before joining Aetna, Paz served as CEO of Penn State Health, leading the creation of strategic joint ventures and driving a remarkable 90% revenue growth over eight years. Innovative collaborations that he established with Select Medical for rehabilitation and USPI for outpatient surgery set new industry benchmarks for health system partnerships. Additionally, his pioneering partnership with Highmark advanced value-based care for Penn State’s 60K lives.
Paz has served as a board director of four national healthcare and pharma/medical device companies and seven health systems. He has also been a member of advisory boards in the pharmaceutical, AI/digital health, and venture capital industries. Currently, he serves on committees of the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academies of Sciences, and Health Evolution.
