Hector Cantu

Hector Cantu is the creator of the nationally syndicated comic strip “Baldo,” which appears in more than 400 newspapers nationwide, and co-executive producer of the newly released “Baldo” animated TV show, streaming on the A+ app. He is author of two “Baldo” books, “The Lower You Ride, The Cooler Your Are” and “Night of the Bilingual Telemarketers.”

He has given presentations at the University of Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue, University of Texas at Austin, Rutgers, and Baylor University, and taught a graphic novel workshop at the University of Texas at Dallas.

The Bermudez family are mainstays of the American pop culture stage, from the car-crazy teen Baldo and college-obsessed sister Gracie to the tradition-protecting dad Sergio and lottery-playing Tia Carmen. Through sophisticated, gentle humor, Cantu and his comic partner Carlos Castellanos bring a different perspective to the daily comics page, giving a peek into the lives of a Latino family.

“Baldo” appears in daily and Sunday newspapers including the Washington Post, New York Daily News, Los Angeles Daily News, Boston Herald, Houston Chronicle and Minneapolis Star Tribune. Cantu has been featured on the PBS NewsHour, CNN and the nationally syndicated TV special “Hispanic America: The Year in Review.” He’s been interviewed by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and USA Today.
