Actress and playwright Heidi Schreck's hit play, "What The Constitution Means to Me," which she wrote and stars in, was inspired by her experiences touring the country as a 15-year-old, giving speeches about the U.S. constitution in American Legion halls to earn scholarship money. In the play, Schreck portrays both her current self and her teenage self, reflecting on her family's history and American history with a focus on how the Constitution has failed to protect women and minorities.
"What The Constitution Means to Me" moved to Broadway's Helen Hayes Theater and has been 30 years in the making but found new significance following the 2016 election. The play received critical acclaim, securing an Obie Award for Best New American Play, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play, and an Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Play. It was also nominated for the 2019 Tony Award for Best Play and 2019 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.
