James Lapine

Winner of three Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize, James Lapine is a distinguished playwright, director, and screenwriter. Renowned for his collaborations with Stephen Sondheim, he wrote and directed "Sunday in the Park with George," "Into the Woods," and "Passion," and also crafted the multi-media review "Sondheim on Sondheim." Additionally, he co-produced and directed the HBO documentary "Six by Sondheim," earning both an Emmy nomination and a Peabody Award. His directorial prowess extends to the film adaptations of "Into the Woods" and "Custody." A versatile figure in theater, Lapine has directed numerous Broadway and off-Broaday productions and is known for the Tony Award-winning "Falsettos."

An instant New York Times bestseller, Lapine's book "Putting it Together: How Stephen Sondheim and I Created Sunday in the Park with George" delves into the intricate collaborative and creative process behind their Pulitzer Prize-winning musical. His recognition in the field is further highlighted by his induction into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2011, coupled with the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers award in 2015 for a lifetime of exceptional achievement in the theatre.

Currently, Lapine is engaged in several impactful projects. He is completing a documentary titled "In the Company of Rose," based on Rose Styron, and his latest Broadway production, "Flying Over Sunset," is set to premiere at Lincoln Center Theater.
