Jason Carter

Jason Carter was elected to the Georgia Senate on May 11, 2010, and served in this capacity until 2015. He was also the Democratic Party nominee for governor of Georgia in 2014. In his professional career, Carter is not only an esteemed attorney at the business litigation firm of Bondurant, Mixson & Elmore, LLP but is now a partner. He is a high stakes trial and appellate business litigator who has represented the National Football League Players Association and successfully defended a global real estate investment company in a high-profile Atlanta real estate development case. He has also received numerous awards for his professional and pro-bono efforts, including the Anti-Defamation League’s Stuart Eizenstat Award and Common Cause's Democracy Award for his work on promoting ethics reform.

During his tenure in the Georgia State Senate, Carter authored legislation requiring the state budget to be presented in two parts: an education budget and a general state government budget. He sponsored ethics reform legislation aimed at limiting gifts from lobbyists and creating an independent ethics commission. He also voted for the "Safe Carry Protection Act," which allows licensed gun owners to carry guns into many public and private places. In addition, he has been named to Georgia Trend’s list of the 100 Most Influential Georgians and has been recognized as a “Rising Star” by Atlanta Magazine.

Jason is not just active in many aspects of community service but is now the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Carter Center since November 2015, having served on the Board since 2009. He sits on the boards of several charitable and public interest organizations, including the DeKalb Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence, Hands on Atlanta and the Carter Center.

Prior to joining his current firm, Carter served as a law clerk to the Honorable Frank Mays Hull of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He also served as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer in Lochiel, South Africa, authored the book "Power Lines: Two Years on South Africa's Borders" published by National Geographic in 2003, and is active in many aspects of the Peace Corps' s continuing mission. He has published articles on legal issues and other topics and has made appearances on C-SPAN and in a Fox News interview.

He received his law degree summa cum laude from the University of Georgia, and received his undergraduate degree from Duke University.
