Jason DaSilva Biography
Jason DaSilva is an award-winning filmmaker, activist, and advocate for people with disabilities, known for his deeply personal and impactful documentaries. Born in Canada, DaSilva began his filmmaking career in the early 2000s, gaining recognition for his creative works that often focus on issues of identity, belonging, and social justice.
In 2006, DaSilva was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition that significantly changed the course of his life and career. Instead of retreating from the public eye, he used his diagnosis as a catalyst for creating some of his most poignant work. His acclaimed 2013 documentary, "When I Walk," chronicles his journey living with MS, providing an intimate portrayal of the physical and emotional challenges he faced while also continuing his filmmaking career. The film won numerous awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Informational Programming.
Beyond filmmaking, DaSilva has become a vocal advocate for accessibility and disability rights. He founded AXS Lab, which develops tools and resources for people with disabilities. These include AXS Map, a user-powered accessibility database, and AXS Film Fund, a grant program for nonfiction creators of color with disabilities.
