Jeff Sharlet is an academic, journalist, and bestselling author. He is the Frederick Sessions Beebe '35 Professor of Creative Writing at Dartmouth College.
He is a also a contributing editor for Harper's and Rolling Stone magazines. His 2008 book "The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power," a New York Times bestseller, dissects the phenomenon known as "elite fundamentalism" and its gospel of "Biblical capitalism." In 2000 he founded a religion-themed online literary magazine, Killing the Buddha, which has spawned a book of the same title and an anthology called "Believer, Beware." He wrote the bestselling book "C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy." When Barack Obama entered the White House, headlines declared the age of culture wars over. In C Street, Sharlet shows why these conflicts endure and why they matter now - from the sensationalism of Washington sex scandals to fundamentalism's long shadow in Africa, where Ugandan culture warriors determined to eradicate homosexuality have set genocide on simmer. He is also the author of "The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War."
Sharlet's work has appeared in publications as various as The Washington Post, The Nation, Salon, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. He has taught at New York University and is Associate Professor of English at Dartmouth College. He is the recipient of the National Magazine Award for Reporting, the MOLLY National Journalism Prize, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission's Outspoken Award, and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation's Thomas Jefferson Award.
