Background: I was born in La Plata Maryland on the 5th of December 1972. When I was born, I was three months premature and born with a severe disability. I was born without arms and very small legs (no knees) which left me without the ability to be able to walk. My mother was 16 years old when she had me and for whatever reason she decided to give me up for adoption. When I was six weeks old a Caucasian family living in Virginia (I am an African American) decided to take me into their home. The doctors’ prognosis of me was that I would probably not live past three months. But the family took me in anyway and tried to give me love the best way that they knew how. But I was destined to live. I began to grow and get stronger. Three months went and passed and to everyone's surprise, I had the independence and strength to do whatever I put my mind to. As I grew up, I lived with my mother and father and three sisters (none of them disabled, adopted, or non-Caucasian) I grew up in the Washington, DC area and then moved to Florida and after that the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee about the time that I began high school.
While I was in high school, I started a love affair with music. I always wanted to play music but I never thought that I actually couldplay music. But my friends were very unbiased and encouraged me to pick up an instrument. Since I was used to using my feet like hands, I started to play the bass guitar. From the moment I touched the instrument, I knew that it would be something that I would do for the rest of my life. And also I knew that it would be something that I would be better at than people who played with her hands.
After high school I went to middle Tennessee State University where I majored in music and film. Through a series of strange and unique occurrences (great story but I'll explain it to you later) my second live performance was in front of 20,000 people where I shared the stage with Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler's, and the Dave Matthews band. That day alone changed my whole life. I was no longer considered to be simply Jeffrey Marshall. But from that day alone, I was considered to be Jeffrey Marshall, the guy that plays the bass guitar with his feet.
In 1996 I moved from Tennessee and came to Denver, Colorado where I still continued to pursue my music career playing and recording with bands that I began forming. And that is when I began seriously writing songs, singing, and also playing harmonica all at the same time.
Once my skilled were professionally honed I decided to travel. I pulled out an atlas and point with my toe, and within two months I was in Prague, Czech Republic (I didn't know anything about the place or any anyone from there). I formed a band with an American who I met in Prague by the name of Daniel Levanti. We called ourselves Supercool and began playing and recording original music and appearing in several documentaries about me and the band around the Czech Republic and the rest of Europe. In 2005 we went to Nashville and signed to a small record label called Earwave Records. After spending another year in Prague, I decided to move back to America to try to make it in the music business.
Even though my disability is obvious, when people meet me, it is really the lesser impression they get from me. But I also know that my unique physical attraction makes people magnetically drawn to me and what I am doing. People WANT to watch and hear me. I give a sense of awe that gives people something very powerful to connect to. In my life, I don't really live the typical "disabled persons" lifestyle, and am known for my intoxicating persona. I am the spokesperson that provokes “motivation.”
